This week at Bathgate Farm – 12 June 2015

We have been busy keeping up the supply of vegetables for winter markets. There is plenty of variety this week at Albany Farmers Market.

Potatoes

    • Dutch Cream
    • Niclola
    • King Edward
    • Delaware
    • Kipfler.

Stems and roots:

  • carrots ;
  • parsnips;
  • fennel;
  • spring onions;
  • beetroot;
  • red and brown onions.

Greens:

  • Tuscan kale (cavolo nero);
  • Perpetual spinach;
  • broccolini;
  • rocket;
  • cabbages;
  • wild greens – nettles, sorrel, fat hen .

Bitter greens:

  • radicchio,
  • scarole,
  • sugarloaf chicory,
  • frisee,
  • dandelion chicory;
  • Bitter green and lettuce salad mix;

Asian Greens:

  • flowering choy sum;
  • Chinese cabbage;
  • coriander.

Winter at Bathgate Farm

Despite the cold and wet conditions we are still producing lots of vegetables for winter markets.

Potatoes

    • Rodeo – semi floury, multipurpose potato for boiling, mashing and roasting;
    • Ranger Russet – very floury potato for chipping, but also brilliant baked in its jacket or roasted. Needs to be watched when boiled as floury potatoes have a tendency to break apart if over cooked.

Pumpkins

  • we have lots of delicious Argentine pumpkins. Perfect for soups or roasting. Sweet firm flesh.

Stems and roots:

  • carrots – small supply of orange and multi-coloured bunches – be early;
  • celeriac;
  • fennel;
  • parsnips;
  • turnips;
  • leeks;
  • beetroot.

Greens:

  • Tuscan kale (cavolo nero);
  • Bitter green salad mix;
  • rocket;
  • cabbages (small supply).

Asian Greens:

  • pak choy;
  • choy sum;
  • Chinese cabbage (loose leaf type);
  • mizuna;
  • coriander.

Preserves from the farm :

  • Coriander and Garlic Sauce – NEW BATCH AT LAST ,
  • Vietnamese Curry Paste,
  • Romato and Anaheim relish,
  • Red Onion and Tomato Chutney,
  • Tomato Kasaundi,

  • pickled fire roasted chillies (mild -Anaheim and Poblanos, hot -Jalapenos)
  • Harrief;
  • quince jelly (including some with quince pieces)
  • quince butter,
  • Seville orange marmalade.

In season this week at Bathgate Farm – 14 December 2013

Harvest time for onions, parsnips and potatoes, plus lots of spring vegetables.

Potatoes

    • Kipfler – waxy fingerling variety. Delicious however used.
    • Royal Blue –  yellow fleshed slightly floury potato, makes the best mash, good roaster and chipper.
    • Norland – red skinned waxy ideal for boiling and salads;
    • Delaware – WA old favourite, general purpose

Stems and roots:

  • carrots – delicious sweet rainbow and nantes varieties;
  • spring onions;
  • red and white salad onions;
  • early brown onions;
  • fennel;
  • parsnips;
  • Hamburg parsley.

Greens:

  • Tuscan kale
  • Bitter green salad mix;
  • Radicchio, sugarloaf endive and scarole.

New season potatoes – Norland and Delaware, Hamburg parsley, Tuscan kale, spring onions, tasty carrots and lots more.

  • Hamburg parsley.

    • Delaware – WA old favourite, general purpose

  • Bitter green salad mix plus some whole radicchio, frisee, scarole and sugarloaf endives;
  • Asian vegetables – pak choi, mizuna;
  • ruby chard.

Lots of Bitter Green Salad Mix this week, plus Argentine pumpkin and Asian vegetables. Sadly this week is the end of the season for potatoes (next harvest Nov).

  • Purple sprouting (purple florets with crisp, sweet green stems – lightly cook or eat raw);
  • Bitter green salad mix pl us some whole frisee and scarole;
  • Sorrel;
  • sugarloaf cabbages (small supply);
  • Asian vegetables – pak choy and choy sum.

  • radishes;

Spring is almost here. We have an abundance of plump fennel bulbs and lots of carrots of all colours. Last fortnight for potatoes.

Potatoes:

  • Norland – red skinned, waxy potatoes for boiling and salads. Boil up more than you need and use them later in a Spanish omelette or potato curry;
  • Ranger Russet – very floury potato developed for chipping, also perfect for roasting and jacket potatoes. Good masher, but be careful when boiling floury potatoes as they crack when over cooked.

  • beetroot golden and standard with the tops on for all those keen juicers and smoothie makers. Beetroot tops are a delicious cooked like chard or shredded in a salad.

Lots of greens this week – we have the first cut of perpetual spinach plus Tuscan kale, collards and curly kale.

  • Dutch Cream – sought after yellow -fleshed waxy potato, excellent for mashing, roasting, casseroles, salads, boiling;
  • Norland (red skinned, waxy potatoes for boiling and salads);
  • Delaware (all round old favourite);
  • Nicola (yellow fleshed, waxy – similar to Dutch cream);
  • Kipfler.

Stems and roots:

  • French breakfast and round red radishes;
  • leeks.

Greens:

  • Tuscan kale, collards and curly kale;
  • Violetta cauliflowers, Romanesco broccoli;
  • Sugar loaf cabbage;
  • Perpetual spinach;
  • Violetta cauliflowers and Romanesco broccoli;
  • Frisee – blanched to produce lots of pale leaves in the centre;
  • Bitter salad mix – Italian style mix including frisee, scarole, radicchio, sugar loaf endive, coral and cos lettuce.
